Spotlight on ESL Student Amr

Our library's Southeast Branch ESL Coordinator April Almon writes to share a success story about Amr A., an ESL student who has been in the U.S. about ten months and is from Egypt. The Library's Center for Adult Learning awarded Amr a Certificate of Completion on May 17th at the branch's Celebration Night. April says Amr has recently gotten a job installing tile. He says he checked in at a doctor's office, paid for the visit himself, and has been able to read menus and order food. He can read a map. He now understands movies and songs and talks with his in-laws! He is pictured here with instructors Helen Hill and Amber Dodge. Congratulations Amr!

The JPL's downtown Center for Adult Learning offers free basic reading, math, and English Language classes to adults aged 18 and older. ESL students must speak enough English to converse with an Instructor. Classes are geared to helping students improve their pronunciation, reading, verb usage, and conversational skills.
